I made a post about Clarence Reid (Blowfly) earlier this year and I searched for a stream of the documentary about him called The Weird World of Blowfly. I wasn’t able to find it then, but I was able to catch the movie on Netflix Instant.
The 90 minute documentary chronicled the man known as Blowfly and the highs and lows of his career as singer/songwriter Clarence Reid. It delved into some of his personal life and squabbles with his current bandmates.
Blowfly regards himself as the first rapper, with no qualms or regard for anybody else who claims it. There were interviews with Chuck D and Ice T who cited him as an influence and even some footage of Blowfly singing his vulgar rendition of Otis Redding’s “(Sittin On) The Dock of the Bay” with Isaac Hayes playing the piano.
The documentary has its moments, it’s sad at times, hilarious, and pathetic, but if you have Netflix it’s definitely worth the watch.
