When you mention “storytelling songs” across all genres of music, certain songs come up. They are the type of songs that keep the the listener enthralled, no matter the length of the song or how many times you hear it. Songs like Stevie Wonder’s “Living For The City” and “Cat’s in the Cradle” by Harry Chapin are examples of quintessential storytelling songs.
In rap music, songs like Slick Rick’s “Children Story,” Ice Cube’s “Today Was A Good Day,” or even “Dance With The Devil” by Immortal Technique come up in conversation as memorable storytelling rap songs.
But, a not as well known, but equally dope song is “1st Date” by Von Pea. The song appeared on The Dutch Masters Vol. 1 mixtape by Nicolay back in 2005. I’ve heard the song close to 100 times, but it never gets old. That’s exactly what a good story should do, keep you wanting to hear, read, or watch it over and over again. Hearing how the story ends always leaves me scratching my head at how the situation went down.
My advice to you is, listen and wait until you get to the end of the song…
