It’s ironic I found the sample used in the song “Mazaltov” today. I was rapping the Nes Phips line in the song a few days ago and it’s one of the many lyrics I live by:
“I’m self motivated so props is not the thing/the approval of spectators does not bring the ring of a champion”
The line is two-fold and here’s how it applies to me:
“I’m self motivated so props is not the thing”
Throughout my life I’ve always been goal oriented. I set goals and do my best to attain them, if I reach them it’s expected, if not I’ll definitely keep trying. If I succeed I don’t look for acknowledgment or pats on the back, after all, if you set a mark it shouldn’t be a surprise when you reach it.
“The approval of spectators does not bring the ring of a champion”
I’m not the type of person to seek attention or seek the satisfaction of my peers. Everybody won’t like you, so why go out of your way to fit in? My mantra has been, “focus on what you can control, do what makes you happy, and just live.” The attittude can be misconstrued as nonchalant, rude, or inconsiderate but if you want to be the best YOU can be, trying to impress others won’t get you there.

Nesby Phips produced this song for his fellow New Orleans native, Currensy, and sampled the self deprecating “Ugly Man” by Gino Vannelli.
