Devin the Dude has been known throughout his career as the go-to artist for features on weed songs. Most people might recognize him more for his feature on Gucci Mane’s “Kush Is My Cologne” than on an introspective song like “Cooter Brown.”
I enjoy the weed songs and the majority of Devin’s work, but to me he’s been unfairly pigeonholed as a “weed rapper.” Step outside of his well known features and popular songs about the 3 W’s (Weed, Wine, & Women) and delve into his solo album cuts and you’ll hear songs like “Anythang” from his third album To Tha X-Treme or “Do What You Wanna Do” from his debut album The Dude. Listen to those and you’ll hear there’s more to his music than what you’re probably familiar with.
In the the latter song, Devin describes balance and use of discretion in life. The potential life changing decisions you tussle with when taking advice from others or deciding to do your own thing. It’s tough and one of life’s lessons that he succinctly describes in the song.
